St. Stanislaus... Bozek... Still a Sad Situation

You'd think the people at St. Stanislaus (former parish in the Archdiocese of Saint Louis) would finally clear up the whole mess they're in, but so far they seem to be content with watching the situation at their former parish decline into some sort of freak show.

Yesterday the St. Louis Post-Dispatch ran a story titled "Priest at St. Stanislaus Kostka creates more turmoil for St. Louis parish." In it, Tim Townsend talks about how Rev. Marek Bozek, the excommunicated former Catholic priest at St. Stan's, has aligned himself with not one, but two schismatic Catholic groups! On top of that, Bozek earlier had lambasted one of the groups of which he is now a member.

Connecting to a Windows File Share from a Mac

Here's a quickie: A lot of Mac users are on Windows networks, and need to sometimes connect to a shared folder on their network to share/retrieve documents with other Windows users. The easiest way to do this is to type in the path to the shared folder in the "Connect to Server..." dialog box. To do this, just:

  1. Switch to the Finder.
  2. Choose the "Connect to Server..." menu option in the Go menu (or press Command-K).
  3. Type in the path to your windows shared folder as follows:

smb://SERVER_NAME/share-name/folder-name

Hopefully, a dialog box will open up asking you to type in your username and password. If you need to find out the path of your windows shared folder, ask your network administrator. (note: private shared folders usually have a dollar sign after them—for example, smb://SERVER_NAME/share-name/folder-name$).

The Legionaires of Christ [UPDATED]

[UPDATE: Just found out about the ReGain Network, which is trying to help counsel anyone who may be having trouble and suffering in the wake of yesterday's news (see below) - hat tip to Dawn Eden.]

I don't normally post on current Catholic news on this blog anymore, but this story is so odd, and so out-of-the-ordinary, that I had to write something about it. It seems that Fr. Marcial Maciel, the founder of the Legionaires of Christ, fathered a child, had a mistress, and did many other scandalous things. It's quite a shock to me, because on one side, I've seen many very strongly-worded blog posts by people who, in my mind, are respectable Catholic bloggers, calling for the denunciation of the Legionaires and Regnum Christi (the lay affiliate of the L.C.). On the other side, there are Legionaires who seem to either deny the story, or are very reserved about apologizing for the sins of its founder.

Announcing LOLSaints.com - Saints with a Smile!

This morning, a new Catholic website is going live—LOLSaints. I've been working on it for a few weeks now, and I think it's going to be a really fun project for me, and will allow me to share some of the humor I find in certain artwork and depictions of saints.

LOLSaints Logo

Basically, the site owes it's style to lolcats (www.icanhazcheeseburger.com), and was inspired by a Tweet on Twitter from CurtJester (see LOLSaints' About page for more info). Click on the logo above to view the site in all it's glory. Then leave some comments, vote on the images, register on the site, and send in your own suggestions!

On the State of Drupal Themes and Theming

I was browsing the Drupal Theme Garden a few days ago and was reflecting on how incredibly boring (if not ugly) a large share of the themes looked. Out of all the themes I viewed (over 50), I might consider using only 10 or so on a production site for a quick project that I didn't want to create a theme for.

No - Yes - Drupal Designs Evaluated

Later on, I read this post on Steven Witten's blog [Acko.net] from 2007, and read through every single comment, because I am extremely interested in the issue of Drupal theming. If you are at all interested in helping Drupal be more themeable and appealing to designers, you must read the post linked to above. Go ahead - read it. I'll wait...

...okay, now that you're back,

A few of the comments in Steve's blog post deserve a mention...

From the blog posting itself: "Not enough Drupal people are savvy enough about theming and design to help out with even small tasks (like a banner) or even give quality tips and feedback on other work. The result is that theming and design receives little attention. Most contributed themes and sites could look a lot better, if they just themed it some more. And getting patches into core that give the defaults a little more oomph is tough, as they are often considered to be useless embellishments.

New Feed for Life is a Prayer.com

In consolidating a lot of my stat tracking and such, I have routed my blog's RSS feed through FeedBurner. If you're reading the old RSS feed, you'll need to switch to the new feed (which you can get if you go to the blog's home page and click the "RSS Subscribe" button near the top of the left-hand column).

Otherwise, here's a direct link to the new feed: http://feeds2.feedburner.com/lifeisaprayer
